Privacy Policy

Last updated October 23, 2026

This policy explains what Immersive Language collects, why, and what control you have over it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than boilerplate.

The short version

We collect what the app needs to work: your account details, your learning progress, and your location if you choose to use Near me. In the iPhone app, Say it and compare recordings stay on your phone. Optional speech-to-text in Rehearse sends a short recording to ElevenLabs after separate permission. Text you choose to send in an AI rehearsal is processed online. We do not sell your data, we do not show advertising, and we do not run analytics or tracking software in the app. You can delete your account and its private learning data from inside the app at any time.

What we collect

Account information

When you create an account we receive your email address, your name if you provide one, and a user identifier. Authentication is handled by Clerk; we never see or store your password.

Location

Near me reads your device location after you grant permission, while you use that feature. Coordinates, which may be precise, pass through our Convex backend to Google Places to find nearby businesses. iOS location services also turn coordinates into a city name. The iPhone app does not track your location in the background or keep a location history in your account. You can use Situations and saved-word review without location access, and change permission in iOS Settings. Website location features may keep the most recent location on your device and use OpenStreetMap to find a city name.

Voice recordings

In the iPhone app, Say it and compare records only after you tap Record yourself and allow microphone access. Each take lasts up to 15 seconds. It is a temporary file on your phone, played beside the example recording; it is not uploaded, transcribed, or scored. The app deletes it when you record again, leave the line, or send the app to the background. If the app stops unexpectedly, it attempts to remove leftover takes before your next recording.

Rehearse also offers optional speech-to-text. After you allow audio sharing and microphone access, a recording of up to 15 seconds passes through our Convex server to ElevenLabs Scribe to create an editable transcript. We do not store this audio in our database or file storage. The phone deletes its temporary take after transcription or cancellation, or when you leave or background the app. Cancellation cannot recall audio already sent. The transcript becomes a saved rehearsal message only if you choose to send it. We retain usage counts to enforce limits. This feature does not score tones or pronunciation and does not give the recognizer an expected answer.

When you tap Listen on a staff reply in Rehearse, we may send that saved reply to ElevenLabs to generate its audio. We return the audio to your phone without putting it in our database, file storage, or public learning library. The phone keeps a temporary copy for replay during that visit and deletes it when you leave the rehearsal or background the app. We retain attempted-generation counts to enforce limits. Pinyin beside your reply is generated on your phone from the text, without a separate provider request.

ElevenLabs may retain submitted text, audio, transcripts and service logs under its policies; we do not promise zero retention. Avoid names, contact details or other private information. You can use typed rehearsal without sharing audio.

Separate website speech features, when enabled, send audio to Soniox for transcription. Text-based feedback may then be generated through OpenRouter. This is not the iPhone app's Say it and compare feature.

Learning data

Vocabulary you study, review scheduling, streaks, goals, chat conversations with AI tutors, text rehearsals, and progress statistics are stored against your account so your learning carries across devices. Rehearsal messages and their conversation context are sent to OpenRouter and the model provider it routes the request to. Place names and public place information are sent to search and AI services to research menus and write practice conversations. If you choose to add a photo of a menu in the iPhone app, the photo is resized on your phone and sent through our Convex server to OpenRouter and Anthropic so the items on it can be read and added to that place's menu, which other learners can see. We delete the photo from our server once it has been read and do not keep it with your account; the providers may retain it under their own policies. Keep people and private details out of the picture. When you use Translate in the iPhone app, the word or phrase you type is sent through our Convex server to OpenRouter and Anthropic to write the translation, example sentences and a practice conversation. We store the text and result against your account so you can reopen it, and we may reuse the result for another learner who types the same text, without your account details. Don't type names, addresses or other private details. Reports about incorrect wording or recordings include your account identifier, the item reported, and any note you provide.

Payment information

The initial iPhone release is free and has no in-app purchases or subscriptions. If you use a website subscription where offered, Stripe processes the payment and we receive its status and identifiers. We never receive or store your full card number.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • We do not show advertising or share data with ad networks.
  • We do not run third-party analytics or tracking SDKs in the app, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Who we share data with

We share data with service providers only to the extent needed to run the product. Each processes data on our behalf:

  • Clerk — account creation and authentication
  • Convex — application database and backend
  • Vercel — website hosting and request delivery
  • OpenRouter and its model providers, including Anthropic — text rehearsals, conversation generation, menu research, translations you request, and reading menu photos you choose to add. Website tools may also use OpenAI for text generation.
  • ElevenLabs — example speech generated from learning text and staff replies you choose to hear, transcription checks of generated speech, and optional speech-to-text for your Rehearse recordings after permission. Say it and compare recordings stay on your phone
  • Tavily and Serper — searches for public information about the places and menus you choose to research
  • Google Maps Platform / Google Places — coordinates for nearby search, and place identifiers for business details
  • Apple location services — location permission and finding a city name on iPhone
  • OpenStreetMap — website coordinate-to-city lookups
  • Soniox — transcription for website speech features when enabled; not used by the current iPhone recording feature
  • Stripe — website payments where offered
  • HeyGen — generated video content in website tools where enabled

We may also disclose information where required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your information for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account on the web, or Your account → Delete account in the iPhone app. This permanently removes your profile, vocabulary and review history, saved places, streaks and progress, and chat conversations, and cancels an active website subscription before erasing your data. If cancellation fails, deletion pauses for retry. The current iPhone app has no subscription to cancel. Account deletion cannot be undone.

Shared learning content remains without your account attribution. Private phrases, conversations and their links are removed. A minimal deletion receipt remains for 24 hours to reject writes from old sessions; an unfinished request remains until deletion can complete. Some records may persist briefly in backups, and we may retain transaction records where tax or accounting law requires it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Account deletion is available directly in the app; for anything else, write to us at andrew@pauseplayrepeat.com and we will respond within 30 days.

We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of under “Do Not Sell or Share” laws.

Children

Immersive Language is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

International transfers

We are based in the United States, and our service providers may process data in the United States and elsewhere. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.

Security

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with established infrastructure providers. No service can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Changes

If we make material changes to this policy we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
